Best of the Best
April 01|2003

So I was flipping through the Marketing Awards, and surely enough, Rethink and Taxi dominated the podium. PJ did quite well. They put out a lot of work this year (East and West combined).

My favourite campaign would have to be from Rethink for their BCAA Insurance. Those billboards were hilarious. It was an awesome approach.

Runner-up; Palmer Jarvis West for their KVOS TV... Springer, Elimidate, and Cheers; very funny. And PJ Toronto for their Ontario Lottery & Gaming Corp., It was a clever execution with the scratch and win method. I have never seen that done before.

Taxi did a great job with MINI; their out-of-home material was always in your face and simple. I guess, all global campaigns did quite well with the little buggy. Power-Brand!
I was surprised to see Flow's stuff from last year. Yes, it was a smart campaign, but it was already recognized for its work. In my opinion, this year's stuff wasn't as strong.

Just scoping out the industry,
alek.

"It's not really a matter of reading alot. I just read Marketing and Strategy every week."

"Whatever fits the budget, Mitch. Innovation has always been key, and putting a car up on a wall definitely creates impact. When there are limits, we have think harder. But the results become stronger."

"I think the future of advertising will be doing stuff like putting golf balls in a parc or a mini on the wall or in a cage. Magazine advertising seem to be dying cause pretty much everything as been done and it will get harder and harder to do something new and fresh but still possible. Personaly that flow thing didn't impress me, it's just that it didn't give me anything to think about. I know it's just brand awareness but still it's good but not amazing."

"I need to correct you Alek, the Flow campaign from last year was not recognised at last years Marketing Awards.....we're talking about this in the forum right now....here's my post:

Come on.....somebody hasn't been keeping up on their the soap opera also know as Canadian Advertising.

Dont you remember how last year Taxi won the project to make the campaign for the 2002 Marketing Awards? So they made the "Merit?" campaign. And there was that one where that guy was going down on that women and a thought bubble said "Merit".......

Well...that got some guy at Rogers fired. Paul Lavoie was unhappy with that decisions so he resigned as chair, pulled all entrants out of the competition and boycotted the show (and encouraged others to follow)

So in conclusion, since the Flow stuff wasnt entered last year they were allowed to enter it this year."

"I agree Mitch, but a few ads did catch my eye.

I liked John St's City Core Golf thing, where they scattered golf balls downtown, around the big bank buildings. I also liked Taxi's Covenant House campaign, with the kids sleeping in the various boxes. That was cool.

But my favourite ad of all didn't win an award. It wasn’t even entered. Anyone see the PJDDB house ad, where the fat blue guy (PJDDB) was grabbing onto the big yellow guy (Idea), while the little yellow guys ran for dear life? That ad was wicked-smat!"
