Identify Yourself
April 17|2003

Earlier in the show, I recommended a book called "Five Faces of Genius" by Annette Moser-Wellman. This is a great tool to help you understand your creativity and how to cultivate it.

Here's a summary:

The SEER: The Power to Image; vision for future, and tests possible outcome. What solutions do I see in my mind's eye?

The OBSERVER: The Power to Notice Detail; conceptual thinking rooted in real issues.
What do I notice around me that leads to a solution?

The ALCHEMIST: The Power to Connect Domains; insights through analogies.
What does this situation remind me of?

The FOOL: The Power to Celebrate Weakness; Ideas that break through barriers.
What happens if I invert the situation? Come up with an absurd conclusion?

The SAGE: The Power to Simplfy; insight to key issues.
What simple solution could I create? What can I rekindle from the past?

As you can see, the creative environment consists of many faces. If we can point out our strengths, we can certainly work on our weaknesses to build and refine our working styles.

"Type Eight
The Challenger
The powerful, aggressive type. Eights are self-confident, strong, and assertive. Protective, resourceful, straight-talking, and decisive, but can also be ego-centric and domineering. Eights feel they must control their environment, especially people, sometimes becoming confrontational and intimidating. Eights typically have problems with their tempers and with allowing themselves to be vulnerable. At their Best: self-mastering, they use their strength to improve others' lives, becoming heroic, magnanimous, and inspiring."

"Type Two
The Helper
The caring, interpersonal type. Twos are empathetic, sincere, and warm-hearted. They are friendly, generous, and self-sacrificing, but can also be sentimental, flattering, and people-pleasing. They are well-meaning and driven to be close to others, but can slip into doing things for others in order to be needed. They typically have problems with possessiveness and with acknowledging their own needs. At their Best: unselfish and altruistic, they have unconditional love for others."
