Dear Jancy: This is probably a no brainer but I can't seem to find a definite answer. What is the proper attire for an interview as an art director? Full suit an tie seems stuffy and not stylish. I know some say that you should always wear a 3 piece but I would think something more edgy or stylish shows you watch trends and can work with multiple pieces. Am I way out of the ballpark here? Does the work (portfolio) need to speak more than the dress code? Maybe that is why I am having a hard time getting hired. A definite answer is really appreciated.

Your best foot forward is to dress as "you". Don't try too hard (a three piece suit is trying waaay too hard and says you don't know the business you're applying for). If you feel better a little dressed up for the occasion (nowhere near formal mind you), do that. If you're more at ease in what you wear every day on the street, wear that. As an art director you have license to dress any way you want to. The CD is interested to know your personality---it has an impact on your job. Your clothes make a statement. Be authentic. You'll be fine.
