One of the most time consuming aspect of developing an ad for a client is figuring out the content that is to be placed in the ad.  Our ads are typically 15 seconds.  The average digital signage ad can run between 5 seconds and 30 seconds, however the length of time that someone looses interest in the ad is 15 seconds.  That being said, finding the content that will capture the audiences attention is a very daunting task.  Our creative staff are constantly seeking new material in hopes of finding that original piece of art that will make the ad...

Got in touble for brainstorming with honesty
Posted by AloneInhouse on Wed 3 Dec 2008 at 01.16.00 pm
Thanks to those who replied to my last post. Your suggestions are great. In yesterday's brainstorming meeting I said something that was inappropriate according to my boss. Here's yet another example of how I have to learn to curb what I say out loud. I am used to a form of brainstorming at agencies where its so honest and open and ideas flow - whether controversial or not. The point is to get it all out there and have an honest discussion so that you can come up with the best solution. Clearly that is not the case here. We...

The corporate politics are kiling me, please advise

I'm an in-house designer/art director/everything creative type. I'm the only one in the company who does this sort of work. I came from being self-employed for years and then decided a "real job" might be the way to go during a recession. Anyway, that's it for background. I'll get to the point. I feel like a doctor who got a job in a post office and is still told to practice medicine there. Aside from giving me a Mac to work on, this company doesn't know how to work with a creative person. They brought me here to spark fresh...

Deep Thoughts, by Aron Tipton

“When I was younger, I used to teach little kids to swim. Most of them were afraid to go into the deep end of the pool. I knew kids were impressionable and I needed to make them feel good about themselves so I’d just tell them, “Don’t worry, it’s alright. That’s where the sharks live anyway.” ...

Keep in motion.

In our creative thinking class we are required to try something new each week and then write, draw, or do whatever about it in our sketchbooks. One of my worst new experiences was the time Neil and I ate at Mrs. Winner’s, a restaurant we now believe is known for its kooky employees and the random shouting of, “Loooord Jeeeesus!  Help me get through this day!” At the end of our meals we felt the way I’d assume someone would feel after drinking a quart of motor oil.  We left thinking, “Loooord Jeeeesus!  Never. Again.”  Some new experiences can be done...

An easy 5-point assessment for 2009
Posted by stacee on Sun 30 Nov 2008 at 03.47.00 pm
With only 1 month left in 2008, some companies have yet to start their '09 planning  due to the financial uncertainty now.  The definition of strategic planning (wikipedia) is:  "...an organization's process of defining its strategy, or direction, and making decisions on allocating its resources to pursue this strategy, including its capital and people."  That definition has nothing to do about where you are now, but EVERYTHING to do about where you want to be.  If you're one of those companies waiting to see what happens - then you'll be playing catch-up for the rest of the year.  Not...

Black Friday Claims Life at Wal-Mart

From AdAge: Black Friday Claims Life at Wal-Mart Worker Trampled As Crowds Rush Door Buster Sale By Jack Neff Published: November 28, 2008 BATAVIA, Ohio (AdAge.com)-A crowd of bargain seekers apparently killed a temporary worker at a Wal-Mart store in suburban New York when people literally broke down the door to get at "door buster" specials inside the store. The New York Daily News reported that witnesses said shoppers continued to stream past emergency crews as they worked furiously to save the 34-year-old worker's life, before the Valley Stream, N.Y., store was closed. A statement by Nassau County Police said the incident occurred shortly...

Can you help me?
Posted by Kristian on Fri 28 Nov 2008 at 05.03.00 pm
Hi, Working as a graphic designer for at relative large danish corp. COWI A/S. I just got a funny little assignment for one of our departments specialized in environmental projects. They want my help to kick start a internal project. They want a visual identity for the project about raising the employee overall jobsatisfaction. There are four themes they want to focus on: visibility internally, time/tight deadlines, pride in work and projectmanagement. Their initial brief for me is that they have an exhibition wall  they want to use for maybe a banner and a tv showing different info. There are also collegues sitting in...
