Is Advertising Eating Culture?
Kirk Souder
Chief Creative officer
Publicis & Hal Riney, San Francisco
We live in the age of the global brand and the global network. An idea
generated in a cubicle in an office on Madison Avenue by a copywriter
from Mineola, Long Island, finds itself one month later translated in
newspapers in cities on all seven continents, from Chang Mai, to Goa,
to La Paz. In this process, inevitably, the ideals and culture of the
people making the ads gets exported to the people seeing them, and through
the power of the message frequently replace the ideals and culture they
called their own. As a result, advertising homogenizes the diversity that
makes our world healthy. Is it time we owned this issue before Lhasa becomes
indistinguishable from Sherman Oaks?

Creative Friendly Rights Clearance
Presented by Corbis
Spots like Adidas' "Impossible is Nothing," or HP's "Pictures
of You" would simply not exist without the use of celebrity footage
or the tones of an iconic, relevant song. Yet, as most in the industry
know, rights clearances can be a huge barrier to the creative process.
Negotiations are extremely time consuming, and approvals can be prohibitively
costly, particularly for commercial applications. Join us as an expert
from
Corbis, the world's leading rights clearances agency, talks us through
the process with tips on how to enhance creativity and make this process
hassle free.
